Last Updated 13 September 2016, Did you know that you can choose your own mechanic to service your new car without voiding your car warranty? Many people have misconceptions regarding their servicing and believe that they should have their vehicle serviced at the business that sold them the car.
In 2010 The Competition and Consumer Act was written to protect buyers from conditional restrictions that might apply after a sale. It means a manufacturer cannot specify where a new car should be serviced while it is under warranty and therefore, that a car WILL remain covered during the warranty period even if it is not serviced by an authorised dealer.
If you decide to get your new car serviced at your local motor mechanic business the ACCC requires them to meet 3 conditions:
Your warranty will only stay void if the work is performed by a Qualified Motor Mechanic/ Business like Andrew McClure Mechanical. If a non- qualified person performs any repairs on your new vehicle you can be assured that any warranty work if required will not be covered.
All servicing needs to comply with the “Manufacturer’s Specifications”. First you need to get the service done when it’s due, either by the amount of km of distance or time – whichever comes first. Second all the requirements specified by the manufacturer for that particular service needs to be done.
E.g. If your log book stipulates that the 10,0000/6months service requires the Radiator Coolant to be changed then this has to be done.
The ACCC states that both genuine and superior quality non-genuine parts are acceptable. This means as long as the parts that are used meet or exceed appropriate standards your warranty is valid. So genuine parts aren’t a warranty preserving option.
New vehicle warranty
Where a problem arises with the vehicle that is covered under the warranty, the vehicle should be taken to the dealer for repair. These repairs should be done free of charge under the warranty.
